Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds announce they are having a baby

Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds have announced that they are expecting a baby this summer.

The couple, who have been together for a year, have also announced that they have got engaged.

Ms Symonds dropped the big announcement in a statement on her Instagram account this evening.

She shared an intimate picture of her and the Prime Minister, and wrote: "I wouldn't normally post this kind of thing on here but I wanted my friends to find out from me.

"Many of you already know but for my friends that still don't, we got engaged at the end of last year… and we've got a baby hatching early summer."

A spokesperson for the couple also said tonight: "The Prime Minister and Ms Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer.'"

Ms Symonds said the couple got engaged at the end of 2019 – around the same time Boris Johnson won the General Election on December 12.

The Prime Minister is already a father-of-five, but this will be the first child born with the 31-year-old partner.

Four of his kids are from his marriage to high-flying barrister Marina Wheeler and his fifth child is with a former mistress.

Mr Johnson recently finalised his divorce with Miss Wheeler, with whom he has two daughters and two sons.

He and Ms Symonds first hooked up together last year after Mr Johnson, 55, split from his wife of 25 years Miss Wheeler.

The pair shared a flat in Camberwell, south London where police were dramatically called to last year over claims of a loud argument.

Cops were called to reports from neighbours of screaming and banging coming from their flat, with Carrie heard shouting "get off me".

But it was late rubbished as a domestic row, which Boris repeatedly refused to discuss, and the Met Police took no further action.

Rumours then later surfaced that Mr Johnson was considering dropping the big question to his ex-Tory spin doctor girlfriend.

He was asked by a floating voter after Mr Johnson won the General Election about whether he was going to "buy (Carrie) a rock".

He said: "That is a very good question. have got to take my hat off to you, you have just asked me the question that no journalist has asked.

"They are just too embarrassed”.

He was then pressed by the voter before replying: “Well I think wait and see is probably the best answer I can give."

He also said he was "very happy" with Carrie.

Ms Symonds had become the first unmarried partner of a Prime Minister to live in Downing Street when Mr Johnson was elected as Conservative Party leader in July last year.

Today's announcement means Mr Johnson will become the first Prime Minister to marry in office for 250 years.

Johnson has often refused to discuss his chequered personal life with the press, even refusing to confirm how many children he has and whether he is involved in all their lives.
