Labour Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford warned he will do everything in his power to stop Boris Johnson’s latest Brexit plan as he claimed the Government will “regret” its move. In a furious rant on Channel 4 News, Mr Drakeford said: “Obviously we will use the whole range of opportunities that are available to us to challenge this Government. Because if it does insist it rides roughshod over the refusal of consent by the Senate here in Wales and as I would anticipate by the Parliament in Scotland to give the go-ahead to this bill, then what they will have won is a pyrrhic victory.

“They will have forced a bill through and they will regret it at their leisure.

“We will do everything we can to persuade sensible people that there is a better way forward.

“And a government that was seriously interested in the future of the United Kingdom would not be operating in this way.”

Asked what he believed would come for the future of the Union, he said: “I think the Union is at greater peril than any time in my political lifetime.

“Here in Wales where I think the case is able to be made for a devolved Wales in a successful United Kingdom, that argument becomes harder to mount and more difficult to persuade people of when we see a bully boy tactics employed by the UK Government when discussion, agreement and a common way forward is obviously available to them.

“We will be very committed to making that a success.”

The SNP’s Westminster leader also claimed his party will look at all options available to stop the Prime Minister.

He said: “The simple fact of the matter is that this is disrespecting devolution, it’s disrespecting Scotland and it’s disrespecting the referendum.

“So we’ll look at all options.

“But the message to everybody in Scotland is we face an election next year to the Scottish Parliament.

“If the SNP win that election, the mandate for an independence referendum with that bill on the referendum will come in front of the Scottish Parliament, let’s – to use the phrase – take back control ourselves.

“Let’s stop Boris Johnson taking a wrecking ball to devolution.”

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the new bill was an “abomination”.

Ministers have argued legislation is necessary to protect the Northern Ireland peace process if the two sides are unable to agree a free trade deal before the current Brexit transition period runs out at the end of the year.

In the Commons, Mr Johnson defended the legislation, saying it provided a “legal safety net” to protect against “extreme or irrational interpretations” of the Northern Ireland provisions of the agreement which could lead to the creation of “a border down the Irish Sea”.

However, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted: “Very concerned about announcements from the British government on its intentions to breach the withdrawal agreement.

“This would break international law and undermines trust.
