During the lockdown, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has regularly provided updates to the nation about coronavirus. Today, the PM will be outlining the measures the UK will be adopting over the coming months to prevent a second wave of infections. It is also believed Mr Johnson will issue an update on getting Britain back to work.

What will Boris Johnson announce today?

Mr Johnson is expected to announce an extra £3billion in funding for the NHS at today’s press conference.

The allocation will help the NHS to prepare for a potential second wave of infections over the coming months.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Thanks to the hard work and sacrifices of the British people, the virus is under control and we have eased restrictions in a cautious, phased way.

“But the Prime Minister is clear that now is not the time for complacency, and we must make sure our NHS is battle ready for winter.

“He will set out a broad package of measures to protect against both a possible second wave and to ease winter pressures and keep the public safe.”

The spokesman added the immediate funding for England was new and not previously allocated, and funding will soon be outlined for the devolved nations.

Today Mr Johnson is also expected to announce an ambitious new target of 500,000 COVID-19 tests a day by November.

With the aim of getting the UK slowly back to normality over the coming months, Mr Johnson is also expected to outline a number of changes to working guidelines.

For the last few months, the Government has urged people to work from home where possible to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

People have also been urged to avoid public transport wherever possible.

But today Mr Johnson is expected to announce an update to the Government’s stance on home working.
