A total of 1,295 migrants crossed the Channel on Monday, the highest daily total since records began in 2018. The spike followed a weekend of poor conditions with a Government source citing a “backlog for smugglers to clear” as conditions improved.
Former Brexit Party MEP Ben Habib said the UK needs border control to solve the crisis. Mr Habib agreed with a tweet from the Bruges Group think tank suggesting the UK needs a “zero tolerance approach,” much like that used successfully in Poland and Australia.
He said: “Absolutely. We need border control, not an expensive, protracted, and uncertain deportation programme.”
