The new figures took the cumulative death toll for the virus since of the start of the pandemic to 112,844. It comes as infections continue to creep up with official figures showing 28,114 new cases of COVID-19. And with the increased number of cases health ministry data showed that the seven-day moving average of deaths jumped to 72, from 66 on Monday.

The figure was at fewer than 20 per day at the end of last month.

France has also reported that 1,953 people are in intensive care units with coronavirus.
