Speaking to LBC on Sunday, caller Olivia from Harrow hit out at the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Priti Patel for their “laziness” with their pronunciation. The caller explained how the language mishaps annoyed her so much that she even considered not voting for Sadiq. She went on to call on politicians and people in positions of “authority” to “speak the language properly”. Her comments follow a row that erupted after crossbench peer Lord Digby Jones lambasted BBC sports presenter and former England football international Alex Scott for her accent while covering the Tokyo Olympics. In a Tweet, her ridiculed her for dropping her “g’s” but Ms Scott hit back saying her accent is a product of her East End upbringing that she was “proud of”.

The caller told Maajid Nawaz: “This topic gets me incensed! I have just been waiting for someone to bring it up.

“I have really noticed this on TV a lot recently with for example Priti Patel and Sadiq Khan and I have to turn it off, I can’t listen to it!

“They are clearly very intelligent, educated, eloquent [people].”

A visibly amused Mr Nawaz acknowledged how the Mayor of London does drop his ‘Gs’ “a lot” while speaking in public accepting it is common practice by Mr Khan.

But in a surprising moment, the caller slammed: “I almost didn’t vote for him because of it!”

Mr Nawaz could not believe what he was hearing as he fell about in hysterics at the claims.

The caller justified her position, adding: “If you’re not going to do the English language properly, why do anything properly?

“My mum and dad do it all the time but when she’s on the phone of course, she puts on her posh phone voice.”

She went on to brand the language mishaps as “just laziness”.

But host Maajid hit back, questioning: “Why is it necessarily wrong as opposed to a different way of pronouncing the same language?”

Olivia replied: “I can only speak on this, sort of, London, southern accent.”

She concluded how “people in authority and positions of power and influence” have a duty to “speak the language properly” as she slammed the supposedly poor pronunciation of the English language.

“Competitors are NOT taking part, Alex, in the fencin, rowin, boxin, kayakin, weightliftin & swimmin.”

But Ms Scott hit back, replying: “I’m from a working class family in East London, Poplar, Tower Hamlets & I am PROUD. Proud of the young girl who overcame obstacles, and proud of my accent!
