Mr Johnson introduced a three-tier Covid alert level system across England this week. But he has faced calls to go further with a fortnight of nationwide curbs in a bid to stop coronavirus cases spiralling out of control. Labour Party leader Sir Keir also urged Mr Johnson for a two to three week “circuit breaker” lockdown, as he said said Mr Johnson’s attempt to tackle the virus wasn’t working.

He added a temporary national lockdown over the October half term was needed to prevent a “sleepwalk into a long and bleak winter”.

He said: “There’s no longer time to give the Prime Minister the benefit of the doubt.

“The Government’s plan simply isn’t working. Another course is needed.”

Sir Keir added schools should stay open but all pubs, bars and restaurants should be closed during the circuit-breaker.

He said: “If we don’t, we could sleepwalk into a long and bleak winter. That choice is now for the Prime Minister to make. I urge him to do so.”

His words came after a paper by members of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) reportedly calculated that more than 7,000 lives could be saved if schools closed and people stayed at home from October 24 for two weeks.
