And Mr Habib, a former Brexit Party MEP, said he was concerned about the impact lockdown restrictions were having on democracy after independent candidate Brian Rose was fined by police while canvassing last month. Mr Habib told Express.co.uk: “Importantly, in the case of London, it is vital that all support is given to any candidate that might eject Sadiq Khan.

“He has singlehandedly busted TfL, presided over record levels of knife crime and failed to meet his own housing targets.

“He spends his time inculcating racial divisions and victimhood whilst attacking the heritage of our great city and country.

“He has to go and that can only happen if we have open and free elections.”

Elections across the country were already taking place a year late as a result of the pandemic, Mr Habib pointed out.

He added: “Local mayoral and other elections due to take place in May are already a year late.

“It is vital now that they take place and that they do so openly and freely in the traditional way.

“Democracy in this country has already taken a big knock which civil liberties being surrendered as a result of Covid legislation.”

Any interference in the democratic right of people to vote in elections would be “unacceptable”, Mr Habib stressed.

He said: “Neither does interference make sense from a public health perspective.

“One thing the government has got very right is the vaccination programme.

“There is clear evidence that vaccinations not only prevent the disease but also the spread of it.

“So the elections in May should be allowed to go ahead unhindered.”

Speaking yesterday, Mr Rose, a New York-born ex-Wall Street banker who has lived in London for 20 years, said fringe candidates were being unfairly penalised by lockdown rules which meant canvassers face potential arrest after he and his team were hit with £200 fines while leafleting in Southwark.

He told Express.co.uk: “The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

If it’s not a deliberate ploy by the mayor – whose job, remember, includes holding the Metropolitan Police to account – then he should explain why it’s okay for him to swan around with officers and photographers, while other candidates have their democratic rights restricted.”

A spokesman for the Mayor of London said: “The Mayor believes it is extremely important local and regional elections go ahead this May.

“The Mayor has done everything in his power to keep Londoners safe.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant drop in passengers using the transport network – which has severely affected Transport for London’s revenue and is the only reason government financial support was required.

“Sadiq has invested a record £1.08 billion in tackling crime and the causes of crime since he took office – more than any other mayor before him.”
