The Rejoiner took to Twitter to insist Mr Blair is the “best leader out there today”. The Labour peer said that the UK would be “better off” if he returned to his old job.

Lord Adonis tweeted: “Most people recognise that Tony Blair is the best leader out there today and the country would be better off if he returned as Prime Minister.”

But his calls for Mr Blair to make a comeback were mocked by some Twitter users.

One commented: “They don’t. Only you.”

Another wrote: ‘Most’ is doing some massively heavy lifting there. It’s mostly only you and a few mate who think that.”

A third simply said: “HA HA HA.”

Another mocked: “Brilliant, you are so funny!”

A fifth commented: “Oh my god… You have got to be kidding!?”

Another dismissed: “Absolute rubbish.”

One more asked: “This is a parody, right?”

Another hilariously quipped: “Find yourself someone who loves you as much as Adonis loves Blair.”

Mr Blair was in charge of the country from 1997 to 2007 and was Labour leader from 1994 to 2007.

He has been a leading voice, through his institute, during the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this month, Lord Adonis took a swipe at Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer over his coronavirus recovery plans.

The Rejoiner tweeted after Sir Keir announced he would introduce recovery bonds in the wake of the pandemic.

Lord Adonis insisted the best way to boost Britain would be to rejoin the EU’s single market and customs union – despite the UK only cutting ties with the bloc at the end of the year.

The Labour peer said: “The best ‘British Recovery Bond’ would be to rejoin the European Customs Union and Single Market – to boost our trade and cut prices.

“Not a good idea to issue bonds which simply drive up the government’s cost of borrowing, forcing taxes even higher.”

Lord Adonis’ tweet came after Sir Keir used a speech to announce plans for recovery bonds after the coronavirus crisis.
