Arvada police shot at a man they believed was involved in an armed robbery at a Target store early Wednesday morning.
The man was killed, but it was not immediately clear if he died by suicide or was killed by police, Arvada police Detective David Snelling said. It was also not clear if the officers’ shots hit the man, he said.
The incident began at a Target store at 78th Avenue and Wadsworth around 8:30 a.m., when a woman called police to report a man had pointed a gun at her and taken her phone and vehicle, a black GMC Yukon.
As officers were talking to the woman, another person called police and said a car matching the description of the woman’s vehicle had run into a fire hydrant near West 82nd Avenue and Garland Drive. The caller said the driver pointed a gun at him when he approached, police said.
Officers arrived in the 8100 block of Garland Drive to find a man inside the vehicle, Snelling said. The man fired one shot, and officers also fired, Snelling said.
“Officers shot into the vehicle and the suspect died at the scene,” he said, adding investigators were working to determine the exact sequence of events and whether the suspect died by suicide.
A gun was recovered from the vehicle, Snelling said.
Additional details were not immediately available.
