Boris Johnson is reportedly plotting a shock return to Number 10 as he's set to stand in the Conservative Party leadership contest.

This afternoon (Thursday, October 20) Liz Truss became the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history after announcing her resignation outside Downing Street.

It marked a joyous victory for the Daily Star's lettuce, which managed to outlast Truss' embarrassingly short tenure.

Now, the race is on to see who will replace Truss as PM after she announced "a leadership election will be completed in the next week".

Steven Swinford, political editor of The Times, tweeted: "I'm told that Boris Johnson is expected to stand in the Tory leadership contest.

"He's taking soundings but is said to believe it is a matter of national interest."

The former PM won't be the only one vying for the top job – and bookies have priced our lettuce at 1000/1 to become your next leader.

Johnson, who only left office six weeks ago, believes the matter is of "national interest", sources told The Times.

Johnson announced he was stepping down in July following various scandals and gaffes including the infamous Partygate affair.

In his outgoing speech he described being PM as "the best job in the world".

"Of course, it's painful not to be able to see through so many ideas and projects myself. But as we've seen at Westminster, the herd instinct is powerful. And when the herd moves, it moves," he said.

"And my friends, in politics, no one is remotely indispensable, and our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader equally committed to taking this country forward through tough times, not just helping families to get through it, but changing and improving the way we do things."

Although Johnson may desperately want the job back, it appears many Brits would rather our lettuce takes the post.

We pitted the 60p vegetable against Truss – seeing whether it would decay before she lost her job – and she didn't put up much of a fight.

With it now at 1000/1 to take over, Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "She came, she saw, she conquered, and with 30 days of life left in her, she's 1000/1 to replace Liz Truss as PM.

"Lettuce-backers will be eating well tonight."
