Boy, 12, leaves his puppy at shelter to save him from abusive dad
A puppy was left outside a shelter by his 12-year-old owner, who wanted to save him from his abusive dad.
The baby pitbull named Rene was found in a cardboard box at the Xollin Refuge in Michoacan, Mexico on February 13.
The refuge shared some adorable photos of the dog to its official Facebook page, along with a transcription of the heartbreaking note that was left with him:
"My name is [redacted] and I am 12 years old," it read.
"My mom and I decided to leave my dog in your hands, hiding it from my dad because he is thinking about selling him. But he mistreats and kicks him.

"One day he kicked him so hard that he hurt his tail. I hope you can help and take care of him.
"I left him a stuffed animal so he won't forget me."
The post attracted a lot of attention, with more than 300 people from all over Mexico asking to adopt Rene.
Xollin Refuge was quick to point out it has 120 other dogs in its shelter that need a new family as well, saying in a later Facebook post: "If everyone opened their heart and their home like this little dog, they would have adopted all our dogs from the shelter."
Rene's tail was fractured when he arrived but he was taken to the vet. He was also dewormed and is now on his way to recovering from the trauma of his past.
"More expenses for us and more work but fortunately you are safe," the shelter wrote.
He's still attached to the stuffed toy that the loving 12-year-old left with him – a grey and white dog wearing a blue bandana – as recent photos show him cuddling his mini pooch.
"Rene with his stuffed animal that his 12-year-old human left him so he would never forget it," the shelter posted.
