Brit butcher ‘shouted out then died straight away’ in 4am Tenerife tragedy

A "family man" who worked tirelessly as a butcher died suddenly while on holiday with his family in Tenerife.

Gareth Moores, 48, flew to the popular holiday hotspot with wife Colette and one of his children, 19-year-old Jake, on November 8 and spent several relaxing days in the sun.

Oh the fourth day the dad-of-two and stepdad-of-two spent the day lounging by the pool and then took in some entertainment at a Santa Cruz resort before retiring to bed – but he wouldn't make it to the morning, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Colette, 56, told the publication: "You pack your suitcases, get in your taxi and off you trot to the airport. You don't think you will end up fetching one of your own.

"We'd had a great time. Then at 4am he just shouted out, fell on the floor and pretty much died straight away. My son works for Ryanair and luckily with his training, he started CPR. But there was nothing there.

"By the time medics came they worked on him for an hour, but that was that. He was only 48 – there were no symptoms, nothing. He'd just built a big extension for us. It's just mad."

Rochdale Coroners Court opened an inquest into Gareth's death on Friday morning (December 2), with his death being described as "unascertained".

The inquest has been adjourned until January 23.

Colette said that back home her husband started his 12-hour days at Royton butchers Shane's Quality Meats at 4:30am, and was excited to have a break from his relentless schedule.

Before landing the job at the butcher Gareth worked in a sandwich shop, where he would make sure children from struggling families would receive food.

Colette and Gareth had been together for 28 years and married for 20.

The pair shared two children, Jake, 19, and Lillie, 18, and Gareth was also a step-dad to Leanne, 38, and Ashleigh, 35.

Colette said she was "still trying to process" Gareth's death.

"I keep waiting for the door to open with him coming in, shouting," she said. "He never left the house without a kiss on the cheek or stroking my arm.

"All five of us would get 'good morning, I love you, have a nice day', without fail."

Colette also thanked holiday company TUI for their help in bringing Gareth home and a fundraiser has been set up to support the family with preparations for his funeral.
