A British woman has been killed and her husband left in a critical condition after a horror speedboat crash at a Turkish beach resort.

The accident, which has killed Anna Capuano, 45, took place in front of tourists who watched in dismay as the vessel crashed with a high-speed water taxi.

Capuano had been on-board the small pleasure craft when she collided into a sea taxi in Marmaris, Turkey in front of the five-star Elegance Hotel.

Responding emergency and rescue teams found that Anna was beyond saving after the horror crash, with four other people taken to hospital with less serious injuries.

The state of Anna's partner was reported as very serious, with the man "out of danger" and taken to an intensive care unit.

Four people aboard the sea taxi, including the 22-year-old captain and three tourists, suffered less serious injuries and were transported to the resort city's Ahu hospital.

Terrifying images of the damage done to Anna's boat were shown on local news sites, with a massive breach to the hull of the boat showing just how awful a collision it had been.

Prosecutors, police and the coast guard have launched a manslaughter investigation.

Emergency teams had brought Anna's body as well as the wounded to a water sports jetty before ambulances arrived to take them to the hospital.

A coast guard speaking to The Sun said: "They were riding on a speed boat when they crashed into a sea taxi travelling to Turunc. The husband is in intensive care but will be OK."

One tourist, a 44-year-old woman from London holidaying at the resort, said: "It was an awful crash and a lot of the people who saw it were wandering around in shock.

"Some of the injured were in a terrible state and the dead lady was brought ashore in a body bag – she clearly had no chance."
