Driver who struck, killed man in Denver arrested on first-degree murder

A man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder after he allegedly ran over and killed another man with a motor vehicle following an altercation in southwest Denver on Sunday night, police said.

The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. in the area of South Federal Boulevard and West Arkansas Avenue, police said in a Tuesday news release. Officers responded to the area on a report of a single-vehicle crash and a person down and suffering injuries. The driver of the vehicle fled the area on foot.

The man who was hit by the vehicle died at the scene.

Investigators determined that the suspect “struck the victim with a vehicle during an altercation and that the parties were known to each other,” the release said.

Francisco Alonzo, 24, was arrested on Monday on investigation of first-degree murder, police said. When contacted by police, Alonzo was “found to be suffering from injuries” and he was taken to a local hospital. Police investigators suspect Alonzo of murder after deliberation and of leaving a scene involving a death.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.
