The European Commission describes the proposal – for 2022 – as looking to a “future that is greener, more inclusive and digital” with maximum participation of youth.

It suggests the ‘Year of Youth’ will go “hand in hand” with NextGenerationEU – a guide to maximising recovery on the bloc post-pandemic.

European Parliament President David Sassoli is set to attend – as he nears the end of his tenure.

Commentators suggest Mr Sassoli is unlikely to serve another term as president.

Votes will take place focusing on education, employment and youth.
