A man's body may have been undiscovered "for weeks" after he passed away in his flat in North Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Residents at the Anderson Tower apartment block in Motherwell raised the alarm when they spotted maggots crawling outside the flat's front door on Saturday (24 July).
When officers forced entry into the property to check on the welfare of the man, they sadly discovered the 61-year-old’s body inside, The Daily Record reports.
His death is not being treated as suspicious.
A source told the newspaper how the man had not been seen for around "four to six weeks" and that the corridor outside his flat now has a fly infestation.
“One of the residents noticed maggots outside the door of the flat a week past Saturday and they reported it to the caretaker," said the source.
“The person who lived in the flat hadn’t been seen for about four to six weeks so the police were called in.
“They went into the flat and found the man dead. It’s really tragic. He must only have been in his late 50’s or early 60’s I’d say.
“The residents have been saying that he didn’t have any family nearby and may have been former military.
“I saw the wee private ambulance take his body away but then his flat was just locked up.

“Now there’s a massive fly infestation coming from that flat and out onto the communal landing. They're dying and lying all over the floor.
“There’s other people who live nearby that have health issues so surely some kind of proper clean up is necessary for health and safety reasons.
“The caretakers are doing their best to stay on top of the cleaning during the day but the flat needs to be properly gutted or it’s just going to get worse.

“They’re horrible big black things and they’re all over the place. It must be a biohazard.”
After North Lanarkshire Council were contacted on Monday about the situation, a team of cleaners was spotted going into the property with bin bags.
