Fury after thief nicks till just days after café owner was allowed to reopen

A "scumbag" thief smashed their way into a café less than a week after it had reopened after lockdown, as shown in shocking CCTV.

Emily's Sandwich Bar, on Old Park Lane, Southport, Merseyside, was targeted during the early hours of Saturday morning (April 17) ECHO reports.

CCTV of the appalling crime shows two people approach the café on bikes before one smashes in the bottom panel of the door and then crawls through the bottom.

The person is wearing a beanie hat and is wearing dark trousers and shoes with white socks.

Footage shows them spring over the counter and pick up the till without a moment of hesitation, before exiting just as quickly as they arrived.

At around 12.50am a person gained entry to the premises, damaging the front door and stealing a blue till containing around £51 in cash.

Emily Worswick, who has operated the sandwich bar for nearly seven years, told the ECHO: "They literally kicked the bottom of the door in and tried to pinch the charity pot.

"They couldn't get it but moved the fridge it was attached to, took the till, and straight back out.

"They knew exactly where the till was."

Emily discovered the burglary at 7am on Saturday when she went to open up.

Since then, she says, hundreds of people have got in touch to see if they could help.

Emily continued: "You know what? For those two horrible people, there are more than a hundred lovely ones.

"I am humbled and honoured with all my lovely customers who truly made what could have been a horrible day, a day that actually made me realise how lucky I am to have every single one of them."

Merseyside Police said it is investigating the burglary.
