Girl, 7, snatched from mum in attempted abduction as police trace man

A man tried to snatch a seven-year-old girl from her mum, with police now appealing for information.

The child was grabbed by an unknown man on Mary Datchelor Close in Camberwell, South London on October 22 last year.

The Metropolitan Police have since released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak with in relation to the incident.

Charges were dropped against an initial 33-year-old male suspect with no further police action taken against him.

In an appeal released their website, The Met said: "At around 17:00hrs on Thursday 22 October 2020, a seven-year-old girl was grabbed by an unknown man in Mary Datchelor Close, Camberwell.

"He dropped her a short time later and left the scene on foot. The girl was not injured and the man made off on foot.

"If you think you know the identity of the man pictured please contact police immediately. Your call could help identify the man responsible or may eliminate someone from police enquiries.

"Anyone who can identify the man is asked to contact police on 101 or Tweet @MetCC quoting 5832/22OCT.

"A 33-year-old man was charged with child abduction on 24 October 2020. He was subsequently eliminated from police enquiries and released with no further action."

Charity Action Against Abduction recorded more than 1200 child abduction offences between 2018 and 2019 in England and Wales, an increase of 7% from the previous year.

A report by the charity based on figures from 2011 and 2012 found that 43% per cent of abduction offences were attempted by complete strangers.
