Kate Middleton received a very strange title after marrying Prince William that she has not used since.

Following the royal wedding in April 2011, the Duchess of Cambridge was given the rather unusual title of… Prince William.

This is because tradition says wives of male royals must take their husband’s name.

For example, the Queen’s cousin, Princess Michael of Kent, isn’t actually called Michael – her real name is Marie-Christine Anna Agnes Hedwig Ida Von Rebienitz.

However, after marrying Prince Michael she was made Princess Michael of Kent.

Interestingly, neither the Duchess of Cambridge or Princess Michael are allowed to be called Princess Catherine or Princess Marie-Christine.

It is only those of royal blood – like the Queen’s grandchildren Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie – who can be referred to by their first name as princesses.

Kate has a number of other titles including Her Royal Highness, The Countess of Strathearn and Lady Carrickfergus.

When Prince Charles becomes King, Prince William will become the Prince of Wales and Kate will take on the title of Princess of Wales.

However, the Cambridges are keen to ditch some of the more archaic royal title protocols, according to insiders.

A source told the Mirror: “They want to be more approachable, less formal, less stuffy and break away from tradition.”

During royal engagements they would prefer to be called by their first names instead of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge."

It comes after it was reported Kate "loved the sweet connection she only has with Prince Louis."

For the mum, out of the couple's three children, their youngest four-year-old, Prince Louis, bears the most likeness to her.

The royal insider is said to have told People: “Everyone always comments on how Louis is the spitting image of Kate.

"She loves it and thinks it's very sweet – she often jokes that he's the only one of her kids who actually looks like her!”
