A major coronavirus outbreak has been declared at a hospital in South Wales.

Service restrictions have been put in place at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant after 82 people tested positive.

The hospital said the "significant temporary service restrictions," which includes suspending planned surgery, will be put in place from 2pm.

In a statement, the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board said: "Given the extent of this outbreak, and on the advice of Public Health Wales, the Health Board is taking a number of urgent and significant actions to ensure the safety of our staff, patients and communities."

The Royal Glamorgan Hospital is in Rhondda Cynon Taf which is currently in local lockdown.

A total of 2.3 million people in Wales are now under tough local restrictions after the areas of Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham in the north of the country were added to the list.

Under the restrictions, no one can enter or leave a lockdown area except for a limited set of reasons.

These include to work if you cannot work from home, to provide care, travelling to education, legal obligation, to provide or receive emergency assistance, to avoid illness or injury or escape the risk of harm, or for elite athletic training and competitions.
