Moment 130ft superyacht disappears into the sea after taking on water overnight

Footage has emerged showing the dramatic moment a 130ft superyacht sank off the coast of southern Italy after it began taking in water on an overnight journey.

The vessel known as the 'Saga' was sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo on the island of Sicily on Saturday night (August 20) when the captain was forced to send out a distress call

Coastguard vessels were deployed to the Gulf of Squillace, where the boat, which was built in Monaco back in 2007, was sinking as water was coming in at the stern around nine nautical miles off Catanzaro Marina.

Four passengers and one crew member, who were all Italian nationals, were immediately taken off the yacht, Superyacht Times reports.

However, four other crew including the captain stayed behind to try and save the vessel to no avail.

The yacht had begun sinking starboard as a tugboat was then dispatched from Crotone to try and tow it back to port in the early hours of Sunday morning (August 21).

Footage shows the moment the boat went nose up and began sinking rapidly at around 1pm that afternoon.

Thankfully, the four remaining crew members on board were retrieved and taken to safety before the boat disappeared into the sea.

An investigation has now been launched into the cause of the sinking.

Back in June, brave firefighters were filmed tackling a blaze on a 30ft yacht out on the water off the South West coast, to rescue the Brits on board.

The crew of Boskalis Marine Services, Smit Dart, bravely helped fight a fire on a yacht and assist in the rescue of persons on board off the coast of Plymouth on June 23.

A video taken at the scene shows a firefighter spraying a powerful hose over the vessel which was covered in thick grey smoke and bright orange flames.
