Moped rider brags that stealing phones ‘is like taking candy from a baby’

A London moped rider has boasted nicking phones is like "stealing candy from a baby" because people are so distracted.

In the BBC Three documentary Inside Britain's Moped Crime Gangs, the criminals show how easy it is to swipe phones from passersby staring down at their screens in busy streets.

Looking at footage of a woman holding a backpack in one hand, one thief who has mastered the crime says: "This is on her wrist, it's going to be very easy for us to take it.

The clip then shows moped riders effortlessly move in behind their unsuspecting victims and take their phones.

According to the criminal, they look for people unaware of their surroundings, holding the phone in one hand, and preferably those who are wearing headphones.

The reporter, Livvy Haydock, then asked him: "Do you think people are stupid walking around with their phones out like that?"

"Of course, you're asking for it in my opinion," the criminal replies.

The reporter objects and says: "But it's so normal!"

He hits back: "It's not normal. How are you crossing the road?

"I saw a woman just now crossing the road with her phone, looking down. That's not normal.

"You're crossing the road. You should have all eyes on the road."

He said the best targets were "people standing up with their phones in their hand".

"We don't even have to get off our bikes, we just grab the phone and off we go," he explains.

The footage was originally aired by BBC Three in 2018 but when viral on TikTok when it was shared by @breadboyuk on July 12.

One viewer commented: "Actually glad they are raising awareness though.

"Like they could have just kept stealing and not explain themselves."

A second said: "Love how a criminal is giving safety advice on crossing the road."

"If you're crossing the road headphones in staring at your phone. Then I dunno what to say tbh [to be honest]," said someone else.

But another user blasted: "I am asking for it? Wow, the mindset!"
