One of the survivors of a horror car crash was left hanging in the wreckage for two days and is now “unrecognisable” due to the injuries she suffered, according to her mum.

The bodies of Eve Smith, 21, Darcy Ross, 21, and Rafel Jeanne, 24, were pulled from the wreckage of a car in St Mellons, Wales, on Monday (March 6) morning, 46 hours after they were last seen.

Sophie Russon, 20, and Shane Loughlin, 32, were luckily found alive but injured, having spent nearly two days next to the dead bodies of their friends.

The crash site was only found after a dog walker spotted the white VW Tiguan hidden behind some trees just 20 metres from the road, with police following shortly after.

The mum of Sophie, a bank worker, is now waiting in the University Hospital of Wales after her daughter has had life-saving surgery on a fractured skull and brain bleed.

Her mum, 41-year-old Anna Cerowicz told The Sun : “She doesn’t know where she is or what happened.

“She had panic attacks throughout the night when she came round so they sedated her.

“She’s in shock and has a lot of injuries – you can't recognise her.”

Ms Cerowicz also told how her daughter was “petrified” while she was left dangling from inside the car.

Sophie was there for nearly 48 hours before being found by a local, followed swiftly by police.

Ms Cerowicz continued: “Sophie was in the car with bodies all around her, that’s a lot for anybody.

“She was in a small space, cold, scared stiff and not able to reach her mobile phone.

“There’s no words to describe it, and I can’t imagine how long it’s going to take for her to get over this – she’s going to need a lot of support.

“I’m heartbroken for the families of Eve and Darcy, they’ve lost a child at the end of the day, I nearly lost mine."

Assistant Chief Constable Jason Davies of South Wales Police confirmed that South Wales Police has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct to examine due to the length of time take for police to find the crash site.
