A police car that crashed into a group of people has resulted in at least four being rushed to nearby hospitals with injuries that have been described as life-threatening.

The incident happened when a New York Police Department vehicle hit around 10 pedestrians in the Bronx area.

A total of 10 people, including six of the pedestrians and two police officers, were left hurt with the youngest a five-year-old child and the eldest a 65-year-old man.

Fire officials later confirmed that four people were critically injured and another person suffered serious injuries as well.

The two officers were described as having sustained minor injuries, but no information was shared on how serious the child's condition might be.

It is understood, according to witness accounts, that the SUV was cut up in traffic, clipped another car and veered into bystanders.

The same sources also claim that the police drove through red traffic lights, with the incident taking place just after 3pm local time (8pm UK time) on Thursday (October 6) at the junction of Hoe Avenue and Westchester Avenue in the Bronx, where the damaged vehicle was left.

In a press conference, meanwhile, NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey confirmed that the officers were responding to reports of a vehicle theft and had the sirens blaring and lights flashing on the cop car.
