Police hunt thug who ‘tried to run over police officer’ in McDonald’s drive-thru

Police are hunting a thug who tried to run over one of their officers at a McDonald's drive-thru, to evade arrest.

The incident left a police officer injured in hospital, after she became trapped between a police car and the escapee's vehicle.

Mark Smithies, 31, was wanted for disqualified driving when Lancashire Constabulary tried to apprehend him at the restaurant on North Valley Road in Colne, Lancs last Thursday (September 22).

During his attempt to escape, Smithies mounted the kerb and went onto a grass verge, trapping a female police constable between his car, a blue Mitsubishi Lancer registration SV11 RWZ, and a police car, according to police.

The officer suffered an injury to her leg and was taken to hospital.

Police have been searching for Smithies since the incident, and have now released an appeal on social media asking for people with information or sightings to contact them immediately.

In a statement, a force spokesperson said: "Officers have tried to stop Smithies who was wanted for disqualified driving."

The statement continued: "In an attempt to escape the driver mounted the kerb and onto a grass verge trapping a female PC between his car, a blue Mitsubishi Lancer registration SV11 RWZ, and a police car.

"She suffered an injury to her leg and was taken to hospital.

"Fortunately, her injuries are not life threatening or life changing. We now want to speak to Smithies as part of our enquiries."

"We have been looking for him since the incident, which happened at the McDonald's restaurant on North Valley Road in Colne, but we are now asking for your help.

"Smithies is 31 and his last known address was Dickson Street in Burnley.

"If you have seen Smithies or know where he might be please call us on 101 quoting log 0473 of September 22.

"For immediate sightings please call 999."
