Royal Family desperate for ‘football to come home’ with England win in Euro 2020

The Royal Family "want football to come home" and for England to win the Euro 2020 final against Italy on Sunday, a royal expert has said.

Prince William was in the stands watching as Gareth Southgate's Three Lions sealed their place in the final with a 2-1 win against Denmark on Wednesday.

The Duke of Cambridge was pictured in the stands next to President of UEFA Aleksander Ceferin, while the Duchess remained at home self-isolating after receiving a Test and Trace alert hit the Firm with a Covid scare.

Wills, who is President of the FA, watched as Mikkel Damsgaard put Denmark ahead with a rocket of a free-kick 30 minutes into the match.

But England forced an equaliser nine minutes later as Simon Kjaer turned Bukayo Saka's cross into his own net as the teams went into half-time at 1-1.

Tensions mounted as the game went to extra time with the scores still level as neither side could break the deadlock during the second half.

But England were awarded a penalty after VAR decided that Raheem Sterling was brought down by Joakim Maehle. The ball finally hit the net in the 104th minute as Kane scored on the rebound after Kasper Schmeichel saved his initial effort.

It means the Three Lions can look forward to a historic first major tournament final in 55 years against Italy at Wembley on Sunday – and the Royals are expected to back the team once again.

Following Wednesday night's win, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted: "What a game, what a result! A huge team effort England.

"The whole country will be behind you on Sunday #ItsComingHome."

Prince William also took his eldest son Prince George to watch England beat Germany 2-0 earlier in the tournament where the Royals sported matching suits as they were joined by Kate Middleton.

And now a royal expert has said the whole family will be getting swept up in the football fever that has gripped the nation ahead of the crunch match.

Brittani Barger, Deputy Editor of Royal Central, a US website focused on news about the monarchy, told the Daily Star William will want to share a historic win with his young son.

She said: "I'm sure like any other English person, the royals want England to win the final – no one more than William in his role as President of the Football Association.

"They will all be wanting 'football to come home' as is natural. Let's hope England can do it and we can hopefully see some cute father/son moments with William and George rooting on England.

"Little George loves football so an England win in the final would probably make him quite excited!"

George was seen to be having the time of his life as his team won the game, clapping and cheering on the England squad.

He even had a sweet interaction with David Beckham, who watched the game with his own 18-year-old son Romeo.

Prince Charles revealed this week he could barely watch England’s tense extra-time win against Denmark in the European Championships.

During a visit to St David’s Cathedral in Pembrokeshire, the prince confessed: “Watching the football, it’s rather too much for the nerves.”
