Prince William made a "deliciously effective" subtle dig at his younger brother during a high-profile speech at a church in Scotland.

Just days after Harry ruthlessly slammed his childhood as a "total neglect" and told of the "harsh" parenting of his dad, Prince Philip, the Duke of Cambridge contradicted his side of the story in a touching speech about his upbringing.

Addressing the general assembly, William said his childhood was "full of holidays having fun in the fresh air, swimming in lochs and family BBQs with my grandfather in command".

But his recollection is in stark contrast to that of the Duke of Sussex, who spoke of pain and suffering in his younger years in his new mental health podcast on AppleTV+, "The Me You Can't See".

Meghan Markle's husband opened up about the strained relationship with his dad and said: "Just because you suffered, that doesn’t mean that your kids have to suffer.

"In fact, quite the opposite. If you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences that you had, you can make it right for your kids.

“My father used to say to me when I was younger, he used to say to both William and I, ‘Well it was like that for me so it’s going to be like that for you.’”

Royal experts have praised William for his subtlety in rebuking his troubled younger brother's claims with his "charming and calculated vision of royal life," reports news.com.au.

The future King continued his emotional talk by saying Scotland had been a “comfort and solace” for him during the “dark days of grief” after the death of his beloved mum, Princess Diana.

He added the country held memories of "great joy" because “the town where you met your future wife holds a very special place in your heart.”

The royal brothers have had a stormy relationship since Harry announced he wanted to leave the royals, and just days ago Prince William said he was "saddened" by the public criticism of his family.

Speaking to Oprah Winfrey and 50 million people around the globe, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke of The Firm's ravaging attitude to mental health and how former Suits actress Meghan was almost driven to self-harm.

The couple has since said in their new TV series that Harry had to "mask" his emotions and "feel less like (he) was feeling".

But William continued to counter the claims in his speech, going on to add to his heartwarming image of his family’s time in Scotland and saying his dad is "never happier than walking among the hills" and his grandmother "relishes every minute spent here".
